GERMANY: Streetart Berlin – Tiergarten – Hotel Berlin, Berlin – Freiluft Kunst Klub Berlin – BERLIN IDENTITY HOME

Berlin is full of stories. Some stay. Others don’t. This project revolves around ever- ything in between. Together and in real time. A conversation that develops layer by layer. The final drawing will unfold across approximately 20 meters of art paper in the FKKB gallery. We open the conversation on June 26th with an evening of spoken word, poetry, freestyle rap, readings, and performances. Sheets of paper and pens will be available for guests to share their own thoughts on the theme-these reflections will become the briefing for the artists. From there, the piece will take shape gradually. On scheduled days in June and July, invited artists will work directly on the evolving artwork. The exhibition of the final art piece will be opened with a Vernissage on July 24th.

The end is rarely beautiful!  –  On foot, by train, by ICE, by bike, on a boat, with a cocktail, dancing. This is Berlin at its most beautiful. That’s why: Never again war and destruction. So that our children can have it just as beautiful. Maybe they think it’s cheesy and stupid. Eventually, it will become home and beautiful to them.

The sun is shining. Spring. Studio. The city stinks, traffic, trees are turning green. Restrained joy and self-awareness; shit, I’m doing well. The most beautiful city, the best people, culture as the center of life. That should be enough for a permanent grin. There’s always work, and lots of it. Gladly. All the darkness is counterbalanced by a huge pile of light. And we’re part of that. Hippie crap? I don’t care. That’s what it’s all about—lights on. In your head. All of them. And go!

“What we need is anarchist communism,” says E. He nods knowingly. That’s the only solution. “You can ask anyone.” We’re standing in the driveway. E. is 13, I think. “What about capitalism?” I ask. E. looks stunned. “How would that work?” he exclaims, running his fingers through his hair. “Capitalism is dead.” He doesn’t believe in anything else, he says. Then J. comes out the door. My son. “Come on,” he says. “Let’s go buy a new Nerf gun.” “Oh, yeah!” E. picks up the pace. The boys, like brothers, disappear. I exchange a brief glance with a pigeon on the street. “We still have work to do,” I say. We both know it. I nod to the animal. – Klaus

Two social systems, two cities, two countries, two currency reforms, but one love!  –  2 is the magic number.

Berlin. Home. Identity. No idea. Stumbling over tenderness again and again. Trying not to be surprised anymore. Not trying not to be surprised anymore. Searching for the light in this city. It’s different. The birds fly in formation above Gesundbrunnen. Down below, the dirt. Being moved. Feeling ashamed because the dirt moves me. In this city, you’re always on the move. Always walking. Driving. Waiting at traffic lights. Smiling at women. Out of defiance. Until one smiles back. Laughing out of defiance. The city doesn’t care about me. Sometimes the city doesn’t care about me either. And then it comes up behind me and hugs me noisily. Seeing Berlin from afar. And never having been away for more than a few weeks. Coming back. Because this is my home. Because this is where my love grows. Because this is where I grow and run. Identity. Berlin. Still no idea.

Everyone always wants something. Attention. Space. More space. Money. The city is in the way. It’s in the way. It’s standing in the way. Electric. Fucking scooters. Get out of the way. I don’t give a shit. It’s so retrun. What to pay for. Chairs. Tables. TVs. Books. Dildos. Pickle jar lids. Cube people. Volt. Uber fucking eats. Lieferheld. Bottles. Bottle collectors. Dealers. Customers. Cops. BVG. Funny. Very funny. Highways. Olympics. Magnetic levitation trains. Kai from Spandau. Love Parade. Teowo. Techno everywhere. Always techno. That’s Berlin. Bar 25. The vacancy rate after reunification came out of nowhere. For West Germans. Offices. More offices. Formerly malls, now offices. THF. Let’s build on it. Referendums. Do something else. Someone always wants something. “You know, kid, East asbestos is worse than West asbestos.”

„Berlin, you can be so ugly…“ Quote from song by Peter Fox. Tanya: Berlin – not despite everything. But now. Berlin. My city. Maybe. Still. Not my ”despite everything.“ Not my dream either. But the place where I—a native Berliner—still live. Because I have roots here, through people, paths, habits. Because my daughter goes to school here. Because her father lives here. Because my mother is in a nursing home here. Because I have friends who know me and support me, who are family to me. Because I have made a decision for the people I am attached to. Many things could be better here, but not everything is bad. If I had more money, I might have left long ago—somewhere quieter, more beautiful, healthier, and above all, mentally healthier. Somewhere with space to breathe, without so many sirens, dirt, crowds, dogs barking at night, blaring alarms, and without the growing ignorance on the streets. The people here have changed, not always for the better. But I’m here. Not because everything is good, but of my own free will, out of solidarity and: out of love. – Tanja
